He is attracted to topics that contain a certain tension. These are most often dream visions- mysterious, shocking, part-horror. In his artistic activity he works with elements of exaggeration, contradiction, nonsense, absurdity and the grotesque. Some of his works refer to certain alternative currents of thought, faith, and secret communities. From a formal point of view, Jiří Šubrt's current work aims to search for possibilities of connecting the technique of collage with abstract artistic expression.

He became acquainted with the principles of art work in the 1970s through self-study and attending courses led by renowned Czech artists. He has been engaged in independent artistic activities with certain breaks since the early 1980s. His work at this time was associated with the technique of collage, with drawing, painting, illustration work and partly with printed graphics. He had several smaller solo exhibitions in Prague. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he created illustrative accompaniments for some unofficial publications and used the pseudonym Andreas Volf. This period was characterized by his collaboration with Czech poets and writers of the younger generation (eg Ewald Murrer, Lubomír Karel Weis, Václav Kahuda). Jiří Šubrt got into more intensive artistic work after a break about ten years ago, when he again and with greater energy became involved in activities in the field of mailart and took part in a number of international mailart projects.
